1.10.1 Assessing Tech Readiness, Proof of Concept, Process of Development

The Technology Readiness Level (TRL) template helps the TTP assess the technical development status of an IP. The TRL scale was developed by NASA, which funds a lot of research and development of mission systems and has become accepted globally. The TRL also helps communicate about the technology and its development status, as well as provides a framework for guiding the technology along the TRL process. The TTP should develop a familiarity with the TRL and apply it generally in their practice.

1.10.2 Defining TRL and Facilitating TRL Progress

Moving an invention/IP progressively along the TRL path is crucial for its commercialization success. Before a Licensee is found, the TTP and the inventor must drive progress along the TRL path. Facilitating this progress is the hallmark of a talented TTP. These efforts, done with the inventor(s), can include securing funding for proof-of-concept (PoC) and pilot-scale testing; finding “commercialization allies” that can support the advancement of the technology; and conducting market evaluations, customer questionnaires, and other market testing. The TTP should always be looking to advance the TRL of all IP in their portfolio. To do so, they should become familiar with resources for such advancements, including government funds for PoC, programs for R&D, partnering programs, etc.
