All qualified TTPs understand the various skill sets needed to function well in this role. There is one difference that separates the adequate TTPs from those that truly excel – that difference is “mindset”. Also called attitude, or personality attributes, mindset is that critical way of thinking that transforms the skilled-but-average performer to an outperformer. We’ll discuss the TTP mindset in more detail in the attachment. One of the key attributes/mindsets of a successful TTP is “vision” and creativity. Experienced TTPs know their Technology Assessment, market assessment, and negotiation skills are essential to the successful Tech Transfer outcome of any invention/IP. What some may not realize is how creative the role of the TTP can be. For example, many inventions are brought to the TTO by inventors who invented as a spin-off from their research program. They often don’t know exactly what their invention is, what its patent might cover or where its highest value might lie. A creative TTP will explore the invention and may help develop it well beyond the original intentions of the inventors. TTP creativity certainly comes into play when considering the value proposition for the invention and in articulating it clearly and concisely. A creative TTP will develop commercialization strategies and plans.
