The long-term success of the TTO absolutely depends on institutional support (i.e., deans, department heads, center directors, governing boards) and most critically on senior management of the PSRI. The challenges for effective Tech Transfer and IP policy are significant; thus, institutional leaders must provide the moral, financial and infrastructural support so necessary for the TTO. The TTO director should develop a good working relationship with the senior leaders of the institution. One of the best ways to do this is to engage these leaders in a dialogue which outlines how the TTO helps the institutional leader accomplish their goals through regular, scheduled meetings to keep them updated on what is going on in their area. The TTO director should understand senior management’s goals of enhancing the reputation of the institution and develop ways the TTO can serve that objective. The TTO director should have these discussions regularly to hear the needs of these leaders and to strategize on how the TTO can help.
